After setting up computer labs in almost all high schools of the province, the Punjab government is set to establish similar computer labs in 3,000 of its 8,000 middle schools in the first phase in next fiscal year. The News has learnt that the provincial government is going to earmark Rs3 billion in the upcoming budget to set up computer labs on the pattern of high schools. The remaining 5,000 schools would then be provided the computer labs in next two years, enabling the Punjab government comply with the Federal governmentís directive to ensure computer education in all schools, from middle level upwards.“We have added 3.4 million new internet users in one go by establishing computer labs in high schools,” said Punjab Information Technology Board CEO Judat Ayaz, who oversaw the high school computer lab project. He said if funds were made available next year, there would be no problem in equipping middle schools with similar labs. The provision of computer labs to 3,000 middle schools would bring the province another 2.4 million young internet users, he added. He said branded global manufacturers had provided software and hardware with three-year guarantee of performance, repair and maintenance. The PTCL had provided broad band high speed internet connections in most of the labs, guaranteeing uninterrupted services for next three years. Even the enterprise supplying 4,285 air conditioners had guaranteed repair and maintenance for three years, he added. He said the government had made the availability of computer labs of global quality on very cheap rates. Originally, he said, the high school computer labs project was estimated to cost Rs6 billion as they were going for 15 branded desktop computers. However, afterwards, it was found that only three desktop computers would be needed if the latest N-Computing device was used. The decision saved the government Rs1.5 billion from the original estimates, he added. This turned out to be a green projects as monitors used as virtual desktops consume only 10 watt of electricity against CBU of desktop computer that used 100 watt. He said the step would help save a lot of energy every year.Judat said the labs of 500 high schools would be upgraded in accordance with the new project. ‘At least 400 high schools could not get computer labs because they did not have access to electricity. This year, they too would get labs as arrangements had been made to electrify the schools through solar panels,’ he added.

Google on Thursday released the code for its upcoming Chrome OS, and plans to have a netbook running the operating system available for sale before the 2010 holiday season.Chrome OS has now been open-sourced as part of the Chromium OS project and is open and free to the development community. It includes the current code base, user interface experiments, and some initial designs for ongoing development. When Chrome OS makes it to the market by the end of next year, all activity will be stored in the cloud, Sundar Pichai, vice president of product management at Google, said during a technical preview at the company's Mountain View headquarters. Therefore, if you lose your Chrome OS-based netbook and buy another one, all of your information will be recovered as soon as you log into the new machine.Pichai did not reveal pricing information, but said that it would “be in the range of what people expect today” for a netbook.Google does, however, plan to introduce a slightly larger than usual netbook to accommodate more comfortable typing and viewing, and it is, therefore, “hard to predict” what type of prices to expect a year from now. Google has not specified a price target that it wishes its partners to hit, he said.Google will initially focus on netbooks, but plans to eventually expand that to laptops and desktops. That will not happen in the 2010 timeframe, however, Pichai said.Specific hardware partners will be unveiled in mid-2010. “The goal is to run it as a very open project and we'll be working with a full variety of partners,” Pichai said.He said that Chrome OS currently works on an x86 processor, but there is “work underway” for it to function on ARM as well.”We don't want to go into all the technical details, but we'll make sure that you can run native-based apps on x86 and ARM,” said Matt Papakipos, engineering director on Chrome OS.A Google Chrome OS device is “primarily intended for connectivity” through Wi-Fi as a “fundamentally different model of computing,” Pichai said. That said, there will be instances where users can cache programs locally and use them offline, like listening to music or reading books. As part of HTML 5 capabilities Google is also looking at offline capabilities, with access to local storage.Wi-Fi efforts are primarily focused on 802.11n, Papakipos said.Pichai was not concerned that the OS is too tightly integrated with the browser, which has earned Microsoft some antitrust scrutiny.”We dont have 95 percent market share in the OS market,” he said. “What we are doing is open source. If a competitor wants to bring a competing product to market under a different name, they can.”Google has not had conversations with regulators, he said.Co-founder Sergey Brin said Google does not think about Microsoft. “We think about how we save end users,” he said. “We take data and try to make sure how we make sense of it.”There will be no charge for the Google OS itself, Brin said. If a partner wants to call it a Google machine, then they can, but there will also be a business negotiation that follows to pay Google a fee.

A Wednesday conference call was scheduled for media, but plenty of Nook information had already leaked out before the Tuesday afternoon event via a Gizmodo report last week, a Tuesday morning Wall Street Journal story — and Barnes and Noble’s own Web site, which went live with images and details about the Nook several hours prior to the press event.

Those details make it clear that the real-world bookseller, with more than 700 physical locations in the U.S. and an online store, is making a serious attempt to dethrone the Kindle as the early e-reader market leader. What’s also clear is that the entire e-reader market is getting as crowded as the Stephen King section in a Barnes & Noble.
The Nook’s Details

Starting at the end of November, the Nook will sell for US$259 — same price as the domestic-only Kindle. Like Amazon’s device, the Nook features instant wireless downloads of books, newspapers and magazines. The Nook will use AT&T’s (NYSE: T) More about AT&T 3G network for its over-the-air downloads, similar to the Kindle’s Whispernet service, which uses the Sprint (NYSE: S) More about Sprint Nextel network.

Both devices store about 1,500 books and are about eight inches long and five inches wide. Both take advantage of a wide selection of books available for download — Amazon touts 350,000 books, while B&N says it will have “1 million” choices, but appears to be including newspapers and magazines in that number.

The similarities end there. Barnes & Noble has added a color touchscreen section to the bottom portion of the device’s face. Most of the upper portion supports 16-level grayscale e-ink, but the 3.5 inch touchscreen section enables navigation, browsing and flipping through book cover art.

Another key difference: the LendMe technology that allows users to lend the books they’ve downloaded to anyone else who is using another Nook, or is using Barnes and Noble’s e-reader software on a smartphone, PC or Mac. The “borrowed” books disappear after 14 days. The Nook can also access Barnes & Noble WiFi hotspots in stores for downloads and browsing.

“They definitely did not want to come out with a Kindle clone,” Frost and Sullivan digital media analyst Mukul Krishna told TechNewsWorld. “They have added something with the multi-touch color display and sharing books — that is all good. And they kept the price point at a level that gives them some wiggle room during the holiday season, when they are trying to grab market share.”
Hurdling the Kindle

“Barnes & Noble is playing catch-up here,” said Forrester Research analyst Sarah Rotman Epps, who pegs Kindle’s share of the market at 60 percent. “Everyone has been waiting for them to make a move.”

Indeed, B&N has spent most of 2009 making various acquisitions and building the foundation for an e-book business. “So to make up for lost time, B&N is offering a device with more features at the same price as a Kindle. They really do see Amazon as their competition,” despite the Sony Reader and forthcoming devices from other manufacturers.

However, the consumer’s willingness to give up the smell and feel of hardcovers and trade paperbacks remains the biggest obstacle, Rotman Epps added. “It’s certainly an attractive product for the price. Consumers have a lot of curiosity about the devices, but a lot of uncertainty. Our research shows 40 percent have heard of but never seen an e-reader device. There’s a lot of education to be done before consumers are fully swayed to buy one,” Rotman Epps told TechNewsWorld.

An August research report from NPD also highlights the difficulties Amazon, Sony and now Barnes & Noble will face with book lovers. Consumers like the idea of instant downloads and being able to stuff a lot of reading material into a single device, wrote Ross Rubin, NPD director of industry analysis. However, they still love the idea of holding a book in their hands. “Today’s e-reader offerings are delivering capabilities that are in demand by consumers,” Rubin wrote. “However, some features that could enhance the appeal of more popular content, such as color, remain on the drawing board. Consumers may overlook their attachment to a book’s tactile attributes, particularly for reading materials where timeliness and convenience takes precedence over leisure.”
Reading the Competitive Landscape

While the Nook does have some color screen functionality, it’s unclear whether it will be enough to engage users that are already seeing bright shades on their iPhones or iPod touches. Those devices are also a part of the e-reader competitive landcape, not just Amazon’s and Sony’s products, Krishna said.

“They’re not only fighting for consumers against the Kindle and other e-readers, they’re fighting for dollars that people have saved up for various other consumer electronics items, including gaming consoles and portable media players,” Krishna explained. “It will be interesting to see how these companies will market these devices, because it’s been an older demographic of late” that’s been buying e-readers, he added.

3 Win Nobel for Ribosome Research – NYTimes.com

Three scientists who showed how the information encoded on strands of DNA is translated into the thousands of proteins that make up living matter will share the 2009 Nobel Prize for Chemistry, the Swedish Academy of Sciences said Wednesday.

The trio are Venkatraman Ramakrishnan of the M.R.C. Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge, England; Thomas A. Steitz of Yale University; and Ada E. Yonath of the Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot, Israel. Each will get a third of the prize, worth 10 million Swedish kronors total, or $1.4 million, in a Dec. 10 ceremony in Stockholm.

Working independently and using, among other things, the X-rays generated by powerful particle accelerators and prodigious computer calculations, the three winners and their colleagues succeeded in mapping the locations of the hundreds of thousands of atoms in the giant molecular complexes inside cells known as ribosomes. In a news release, the Swedish academy said the three were being honored “for having showed what the ribosome looks like and how it functions at the atomic level.”

The work, scientists said, has had important medical implications. Some antibiotics work by gumming up the ribosomes of bacteria, allowing those bacteria to be stopped at no danger to their host. The ribosome research, the academy said, is being used to develop new antibiotics.

Dr. Ramakrishnan was born in Chidambaram, India, in 1952 and obtained his Ph.D. at Ohio University. He holds United States citizenship. Dr. Steitz was born in Milwaukee in 1940 and got his Ph.D. from Harvard.

Dr. Yonath was born in Jerusalem in 1939, earned her Ph.D. at the Weizmann Institute of Science and has worked in Israel her whole life. She said on Wednesday that she was both surprised and not surprised at being awarded a Nobel Prize.

The trio are Venkatraman Ramakrishnan of the M.R.C. Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge, England; Thomas A. Steitz of Yale University; and Ada E.

Google Docs opens heart to students • The Register
Mountain View has tweaked Google Docs to make the average schoolkid’s working day even easier to cheat negotiate their way through.

The search giant has added student-friendly features to Docs, which is part of the company’s Google Apps suite.

It’s added an equation editor, allowing students to solve maths problems within an online document. Youngsters can write papers, take notes and answer questions in class using Google Docs, assuming their school or college lets them, that is.

Students can insert superscripts and subscripts into Google Docs that can be used for writing tricky chemical compounds or algebraic expressions.

Additionally, translation features were slotted into Google Docs a few weeks ago, which as the firm’s summer interns who worked on the tweaks – Rita Chen and Stephanie Vezich – helpfully pointed out, is a dreadfully “handy” tool “for making sure you’re on the right track when writing those foreign language essays”.

Google Docs now also comes with a “Go to page based on answer” option in Google forms. It’s useful for students conducting surveys that want to pick and choose what questions are relevant to participants they probe about the latest sociological breakthrough in Big Brother, or whatever it is kids ponder over at school these days.

And an all-inclusive Google has also offered humanities students a tool that prettifies and customises essays, allowing them to turn in a “cleaner-looking paper” that includes an option to print footnotes as endnotes.

To underline its commitment to teenagers across the globe, Google’s even knocked together this jarring video that shows spotty oiks how to write an effective love letter using Google Docs to bag the girl of their dreams.

The pioneering PC, known as the Spacebook, is the brainchild of Alaska-based technology firm gScreen.

While growing numbers of office workers – especially in the financial industries – use several desktop monitors to track many programmes and information sources at the same time, no manufacturer has yet released a portable equivalent. The gScreen Spacebook will boast two 15.4 in screens which can slide away to fill the space of a single screen when the laptop is being stored or transported.

The first photos of the pioneering gadget have been obtained by Gizmodo, the US technology website.

Gordon Stewart, the founder of gScreen, told the website that the first Spacebooks should be available on Amazon by December this year, once final modifications are complete.

“We designed this knowing that many may not need the extra screen at all times,” he said.

The dual-screen laptop is aimed at professional video editors, photographers and designers who need to flick between different applications to carry out their work.

But anyone willing to meet the expected $3,000 (£1,835) price tag should be warned that the double screen is likely to push the weight of the Spacebook significantly above standard laptops. The energy demands of running two monitors will also prove a drain on the computer’s batteries.

Other technology firms have produced laptops with smaller bolt-on second screens, but this is believed to be the first model with twin monitors of equal size.
